Aussies, start your Engins!

Internet telephony vendor Engin today announced its partnering with Nokia to launch a Voice over Internet Protocol mobile phone service. Engin will supply low-cost calls through its wireless broadband technology and the Nokia N80 Internet Edition handset.

Engin PR states that “The new service will complement existing GSM/WCDMA infrastructure by making use of wireless local area network broadband wherever its available.” Users will be able to make 10 cent (approximately US $0.08) untimed calls to landlines around Australia and 20 cent (approximately US $0.15) untimed calls to 20 countries around the world.

Engin lays claim to status as the “first broadband telephony service to be broadly available to Australian consumers and businesses on the shelves of major retailers." Headquartered in Sydney, Engin received its telecommunications carrier license in 2004.
